MP Nigel Waterson today challenged Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the
Commons chamber over the EU treaty. The MP is campaigning locally for
a Referendum on the new EU Constitution. Gordon Brown was making a
Statement to the Commons following the Lisbon EU summit.
Nigel
asked the Prime Minister: “As the Prime Minister rejects the judgment
of senior European statesmen that this Treaty represents 90 to 98% of
the original EU Constitution, would he care to put a figure on it?”
Nigel
commented afterwards: “In response, all the Prime Minister did was
read out quotes from some European politicians. He certainly made no
attempt to answer my question.”
“The fact remains
that in most respects the Treaty Gordon Brown has put his name to is
taken word for word from the previous EU Constitution. It sets up a
President and Foreign Minister for the EU, scraps over 60 national
vetoes and in effect establishes the EU as a sovereign state. Yet
this Government still refuse to honour their 2005 pledge to hold a
Referendum.” |
